INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for the

HOYME AIR EXCHANGER (HAE)-HRV
A FURNACE FAN GENERATED AIR EXCHANGER (HRV) FOR THE 'WHOLE HOUSE AS A SYSTEM'

THIS LAB TESTED AIR EXCHANGER (HAE) SHOWED AN APPARENT SENSIBLE EFFECTIVENESS OF OVER  *10% HIGHER THAN THE CONVENTIONAL HRV, IS LOW IN MAINTENANCE, EASY TO INSTALL AND PROVIDES A CONTINUAL FLOW OF FRESH AIR EVEN DURING LONG PERIODS OF EXTREME COLD TEMPERATURES

 The Hoyme Air Exchanger is Furnace Fan Generated and designed to be inter-connected to

a Forced Air Heating System.

Additional fans may be necessary if not connecting to a forced air heating system.

 *Motorized Dampers are optional but recommended.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

READ COMPLETE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE STARTING THE INSTALLATION OF THIS PRODUCT.

THIS INSTALLATION SHALL BE SUBJECT TO THE APPROVAL OF THE ENFORCING AUTHORITIES

Air supply and installation shall be in accordance with National Building Codes and/or Local Codes.

DESIGNED TO BE INTER-CONNECTED TO A CONTINUALLY RUNNING FURNACE FAN SYSTEM.

1. Select location for the HAE, preferably close to outside wall. Location must allow for bottom cover to be removed for cleaning.

2. Mount the HAE securely using screws and two metal Mounting Brackets(#10) supplied.

 

Note: To assist water drainage, mount HAE level with ½" drain spout towards furnace and all 5"Ø Ducts to slope towards the HAE. 

SUGGESTION: To assist air flow and drainage, consider using rigid ducting instead of flex.

3. Cut an 8"Ø hole on return plenum, (9"Ø on 200 cfm model) preferably on flat side of drop plenum just past inner corner and mount Double Plenum Connector(#3).
(Fasten the air flow shield at this stage to increase fresh air flow)

4. Select location on the hot supply plenum close to the furnace and cut a 5"Ø hole for the adjustable Manual Air Balance Damper(#5b). (see balancing air flow on page 4)

(Fasten air flow scoop at this time to increase the exhaust of stale air)

5. If other exhaust fans are routed through the HAE, mount a Backdraft Damper(#5a) to Manual Air Balance Damper(#5b).
(See page 6 for routing other exhaust fans through HAE.)

6. Join the Double Plenum Connector(#3) to Backdraft Damper(#5a) -or- Manual Air Balance Damper(#5b) on the supply plenum with 5"Ø Flexible Aluminium Foil Duct(#8) as part of the installation kit.

7. When Double Hood(#2) is used cut an 8"Ø (or 9"Ø for 200 cfm model) opening in outside wall and insert Double Hood (#2) from outside. Fasten into place with proper screws.*  

* If two separate outside hoods are used, outside hoods should be placed at least 6 ft. apart and the inside Two-Hood Connector(#2a) as close as possible to the outside hoods.

* Join 6"Ø (7”Ø for 200 CFM Model) of Two Hood Connector(#2a) to 6"Ø (7"Ø for 200 CFM Model) inlet hood & join 5"Ø of Two Hood Connector(#2a) to 5"Ø outside exhaust hood with insulated ducting.

* Two Hood Connector(#2a)  must also be insulated. 

* Offset Double Hood Connector (#2b) is used when a Double Hood(#2) and Offset Model HAE are used together.

8. Fasten 5"Ø Non-insulated Flex Ducting(#6) to the 5"Ø sleeve of the Double Hood(#2) *(or Two Hood Connector(#2a) ) with a sheet metal screw. Stretch the 5"Ø Non-insulated Flex Ducting(#6) to reach the HAE and cut to length.

9. Feed 8"Ø (9"Ø) Insulated Flex Ducting(#7) over the 5"Ø Non-insulated Flex Ducting(#6) and fasten to the 8"Ø (9"Ø) Double Hood(#2) *(or Two Hood Connector(#2a)Stretch 8"Ø (9"Ø) Insulated Flex Ducting(#7) to reach HAE and cut to length.

10. Fasten the loose end of 5"Ø Non-insulated Flex Ducting(#6) to the 5"Ø HAE Extension Sleeve(#6a)  and insert into the end of HAE and fasten with sheet metal screw.

11. Stretch and connect loose end of 8"Ø (9"Ø) Insulated Flex Ducting(#7) to the HAE(ducting that is not stretched reduces air flow space between 5"Ø & 8"Ø (9"Ø) ducts.)

12. Follow the above procedure when connecting flex ducting between the HAE and Double Plenum Connector(#3). Insulated ducting is not recommended here.

13. Connect ½" Plastic Drain Hose(#9). To provide proper drainage, level of hose must always be lower than the bottom of the HAE.

NOTE: FASTEN ALL DUCTING IN A NEAT AND TIDY MANNER, FREE FROM PUNCTURES,  EXCESSIVE HEAT AND WEAR. CAREFULLY TAPE ALL ENDS.

SUPPORT FLEX DUCTING AS LEVEL AS POSSIBLE TO PREVENT WATER POCKETS FORMING DURING DEFROSTING MODE.

BALANCING AIR FLOW:

- The INLET duct is to be left wide open to allow for maximum fresh    air flow during continual operation of the furnace fan.

 - The Fresh air flow is increased by adding the air flow shield faced downstream inside the return plenum.

 - The Stale air leaving is increased by adding the air flow scoop faced upstream inside the supply plenum.

 - Stale air leaving can also be regulated by adjusting the Manual Air Balance Damper(#5b). 


Suggestion:   Start by setting the Manual Air Balance Damper(#5b) to be two-thirds open.

TEST MANUAL AIR BALANCE DAMPER(#5b) SETTING WHILE FURNACE FAN IS RUNNING BUT FLAME IS NOT FIRING:

1) If outside temperature is zero (C), then incoming air should enter the plenum at approx. 18 (C) while the air leaving should read approx. 10 (C).

2) If outside temperature is -30 (C), then incoming air should inter the plenum at approx. 14 (C) while the air leaving should read approx. zero (C).

Adjust the Manual Air Balance Damper(#5b) to arrive at these approximate temperatures. Ice formed by the damp air leaving will melt during the times furnace fires. Heat during the firing cycle melts the ice formed and is drained off through a ½" plastic hose.

Remember: Air must leave the dwelling to allow air to enter and that air entering must be warmed by the right amount of air leaving.

ADDING AN EXHAUST FAN(S)

FROM BATHROOM, KITCHEN AND OTHER AREAS

HAE - To Add Exhaust Fan

 

 

1. Install a Y-duct(5"Ø x 5"Ø x 4"Ø) inline between the 5"Ø Backdraft Damper(#5a) connected to the Manual Air Balance Damper(#5b) on the supply plenum and the 5"Ø side of the Double Plenum Connector(#3) as shown in the illustration.

2. Install 4"Ø back draft damper inline the 4"Ø side of the Y-duct.

3. Connect the exhaust fan duct to 4"Ø Y- duct as shown.

Additional exhaust fans can also be installed in the same way each with their own Y-duct and 4"Ø back draft damper.
